Chapter 18: Eyes and ears wide open

18:3   ‘All you people of the world, you who live on the earth, when a banner is raised on the mountains, you will see it, and when a trumpet sounds, you will hear it.’

Seeing and hearing is a theme that runs through the scriptures. Already, in Chapter 6 we have read “‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ (Isaiah 6:9) This topic is taken up in the parable of sower (Mark 4).

Seeing and reading the signs of the times is a duty of Christians in the 21st century just as it was for the people of Israel millennia ago. Hearing the word speak to us in the gentle moments of the day is a privilege.

When, after all our striving, we have attained a place of quiet attentiveness that Word will speak to us. We must prepare for that moment with eyes and ears wide open.
