16:5 ‘In love a throne will be established; in
faithfulness a man will sit on it – one from the house of
David – one who in judging seeks justice and speeds the cause of
righteousness.’
Here,
again, Christians read Isaiah as foretelling the coming of the Christ will sit
on the Throne of David. The imagery is kingly, power-laden and driven by
justice understood as right living and right relationships. As we move through the Book(s) of Isaiah we
meet the Suffering Servant. It turns out that the King-to-be is scarcely
recognisable in terms of the preconceptions we have. Do we miss the signs of
providence in our own immediate milieu? Is the king to be served resting at the
bottom of the stairs in an apartment block?
