13:11 ‘I will put an end to the arrogance of the
haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless.’
Following
a tranquil interlude in the previous chapter, Chapter 13 contains dire warnings
and threats. This reminds the reader of the end-time predictions in the Gospels
including that of Saint Matthew (for example 24:29). In this passage of Isaiah,
the nations of Babylon, Assyria and Philistia are in the firing line of dread warnings.
Reading this
passage is challenging for contemporary readers especially as we are only too
well aware of various claimed ‘holy wars’ in those very same regions of the
world where these ancients stories were played out. A lesson to be learned for
us today is that peace should never be taken for granted. The seeds of conflict
and bloodshed lie in human pride and arrogance which fails to see the face of
our brother in the stranger.
