24:5 ‘The earth is defiled by its people; they
have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting
covenant.’
The
destruction of our mother Earth is a modern betrayal of that ancient covenant
that binds us together as pilgrims on this beautiful earth. But we have
disobeyed the laws of nature, violated the delicate eco-balance and walked away
from the everlasting covenant. The signs are everywhere – unprecedented (since
the time of Isaiah) raising of earth temperatures, increasingly freakish
weather patterns (in case we have not noticed), droughts, floods and
carbonisation of the economy. There are movements of migrants fleeing drought,
famine and political turmoil – some of which is not unconnected to climate
change. We celebrate carbon-intensive ‘growth’ but neglect the quality,
distribution and meaning of that growth. We are addicted to forms of
consumption and production that will leave the planet damaged beyond repair to
our grandchildren unless we act now.
Chapter 24 of Isaiah needs to be read again very carefully.
