Isaiah chapter 44: Stopping to think

44:18-19  ‘ So we see again how it is that they’re blind—their eyes shut to the truth in front of them, their hearts and minds refusing to think and really understand what’s going on.  So without stopping to think about it....

So much of people do is done ‘without stopping to think about it.’ They are like drivers on a dark country road late at night driving fast and furiously trying to reach a destination quickly. Were we to stop more often and listen and look we might be taken by surprise at where we are, where we are going, who we are with and who we are not with, why we are trying to go there and what are the consequences of what we do and say. In the lives of countries, governments and organisations decisions are made on an hourly and daily basis without due regard for the consequences to others and to those making those decisions.

Lord open our eyes and hearts to see our truth before us. Help us realise that you are calling us in ways unknown and hidden. May we learn to stop and listen, consider and be ever ready to change course when that is what you want us to do. It is never too late or inopportune to change.

As John Newman once wrote:
‘To live is to change, and to be perfect to have changed often’

‘You know what is wrong with the world – the people who act don’t think and the people who think don’t act’ (attributed to Peter Maurin of the Catholic Workers’ Movement in the film: Entertaining Angels: The Dorothy Day Story)
