Eucharistic joy at Pentecost

The cultural and ethnic diversity of Ireland is most welcome and has greatly enriched our society. Yesterday, I attended an African cultural evening in Carlow Town. It was noisy, colourful, busy, and above all joyful. The dancing, the food, the music, and the lively chatter made it a truly memorable occasion.

There is something about African culture, as we experience it here in Ireland, that is uplifting, joyful, and community-oriented. Perhaps we have lost some of that spirit in recent years?

I am reminded that what drew the crowds on that Pentecost day over 2,000 years ago was the extraordinary power, witness, and joy of the disciples, as they went among the people, speaking in their languages and proclaiming the Kingdom of God in new and vibrant ways.

We believe that the Eucharist is the source and summit of all Christian life. If we are touched by this flame of love, then others will catch it too. If we feel that the flame has been dimmed or extinguished, let us open ourselves once again to the Giver of life, joy, and courage. And let us be thankful for all our sisters and brothers. Perhaps they will help lead us closer to Christ after a winter of scandal, depletion, and discouragement.
