Love is in the air

Its spring here in the Northern Hemisphere.  The daffodils are budding everywhere.  Dashes of white snow drops appeared weeks ago already.

The days are getting longer. Here in the Western hemisphere, today is the feast of St Cyril and St Methodius, Apostles to all the Slavic people of Central and Eastern Europe as well as ‘Co-Patrons’ of Europe. O, today is also associated with a Saint Valentine, a third-century Roman saint who was a priest, possibly a bishop and was martyred.  For various reasons more to do with folklore and popular culture his name became associated with courtly love and fidelity in the middle ages and today it is a firm red day in the secular calendar.

Some say marriage is a lifelong martyrdom!  I suggest that the entire Christian life is a joyful giving of oneself not without trials, tribulations and sufferings along the way.  Feeling and action are inseparable.  Martyrs like Valentine united their sacrifice with that of Christ in the Eucharist.  Their offering of love pointed to the altar the source of healing, life and renewal.
